Mozart/Sor: Three arias from Don Giovanni

This is a digital download (pdf).

Mozart/Sor: Three arias from Don Giovanni are here presented in the arrangements that Sor made of them for voice and guitar.

“This music from Mozart is wonderful. I just realized that period transcriptions (from good composers) are a very good way to understand the music in its time period” (Mike Yee, a guitarist)

This is an exciting event: the first modern publication of these three arrangements of arias from Don Giovanni, in which Sor arranged the accompaniments for guitar. Newly engraved.

There are three arias in all: ‘Batti, batti’, ‘Deh vieni alla finestra’, and ‘Vedrai carino’. ‘Deh vieni alla finestra’ is particularly well known and would be a fine item for performance. 16 pages.

First published by Tecla in 2000. Contains all three arias.

The three arias are:
‘Batti, batti’ (b to a”)
‘Deh vieni alla finestra’ (e to f’ sharp)
and ‘Vedrai carino’ (e to e’)

The ranges are indicated above as follows:
a, b, c, and so on up to g: this means from the a four notes below the treble stave, up to the g which is on the second line of the treble stave.
a’, b’, c’, and so on up to g’: this means from the a which is on the second space of the treble stave, up to the g which is on the space just above the treble stave.
a”, b”, c”, and so on: this means from the a which is on the line immediately above the treble stave, upwards.

REVIEW by Francesco Biraghi in Il Fronimo, April 2001:

… questi tre adattamenti, fino ad oggi non disponibili in edizione moderna … Un’eccellente acquisizione nel repertorio voce-chitarra (these three arrangements, not available until now in a modern edition . . . An excellent addition to the repertory for voice and guitar.)

REVIEW by Piero Viti in the Italian journal Guitart, 2000:

… una nuova interessante pubblicazione nel catalogo delle opere di Sor … una gustosa riscoperta che di certo troverà il suo valido spazio nel repertorio vocale con chitarra (a new and interesting publication in the list of the works of Sor … a discovery full of savour which will certainly find its proper place in the repertory of voice with guitar.)

REVIEW by Florian Conil in the French journal Les Cahiers de la Guitare, 2000:
