All the pieces in Segovia’s “Twenty Studies” by Sor are included in the Tecla edition of Sor’s The Complete Studies, Lessons, and Exercises (TECLA 101), but the Tecla edition is edited completely anew from the original sources, thus providing a newly edited text and restoring Sor’s original fingering. Here is a table of the pieces in Segovia’s “Twenty Studies” giving their original opus numbers and their page numbers in TECLA 101.

You can see all this music, newly edited from the original sources, in Sor’s Complete Studies, Lessons and Exercises for Guitar (Tecla 101) which is available from Tecla. Andrés Segovia published his selection of twenty pieces by Sor, which he called “Twenty Studies”, in the 1920s. In fact only some of the twenty pieces are what Sor called studies, while others Sor called lessons or exercises. Segovia appears to have based his edition not on the original editions of Sor’s music, but rather on a later selection of 24 pieces which had been chosen by Sor’s student Napoléon Coste, and he added new modern fingering. The concordance with Sor is the list above. Sor’s Complete Studies, Lessons and Exercises for Guitar (Tecla 101) is a new edition of all Sor’s studies, including all those twenty and many more, in a new edition re-engraved and scrupulously newly edited direct from the original editions, and without any fingering other than that of the composer. |
