Carcassi: 25 Etudes for Guitar, op. 60

edited by Brian Jeffery

Carcassi 25 Etudes for guitar - from Tecla Editions

Carcassi's 25 Etudes op. 60 are perhaps Carcassi's most famous work and have been known to generations of guitarists.  This edition by Brian Jeffery of the 25 Etudes op. 60 broke new ground when it was first published in 2006, in that it is based on a detailed re-examination of the original sources.  This is a complete definitive edition newly established from the original sources, with only the original fingering; no new fingering has been added. Notes on technique and interpretation are provided.

Prescribed by the Associated Board in their new 2008 syllabus.

Why should I use this edition of Carcassi's 25 Etudes op. 60 rather than any other? - Because this edition of the Carcassi Etudes establishes a new and fully reliable text, fully practical, with comments on every piece, at a very reasonable price, easily available with low postage worldwide. These Etudes were originally published only after Carcassi's death in 1853 and the only known original editions contain many problems in the text. This edition, as far as I know for the first time for more than half a century, examines those problems and finds solutions.

A standard edition specially for students. Newly edited by Brian Jeffery.  48 pages.

In 2010 the guitarist and teacher Heinrich Jochen wrote in an email: "The Carcassi opus 60 [that is to say, this edition TECLA 0345] is really a fortune, since any other edition I had viewed contained too much added fingering foreign to Carcassi's".

Jamie Akers has just placed on Youtube a series of videos in which he performs studies by Sor, Giuliani, and Carcassi, including eloquent performances of some of these Carcassi etudes. Particularly worth hearing in my opinion are his performances of etudes from this book numbers 9, 16 and 17.
